New Transceiver from Kenwood

The new Kenwood TS-590

At Dayton 2010 Kenwood announced the release of a new radio, the Kenwood TS-590. Will it be a useful radio for the RAIBC?

The radio is an HF and 6 meter transceiver with built in AATU. It also has DSP and a USB port for PC control.
However what has caught our eye is the fact that it takes the excellent Kenwood Voice Chip the VGS-1. This is the chip which is used in the TS-570 and TS-480. Since the demise of the TS-570 we have been looking for a suitable HF rig for visually impaired amateurs. The Kenwood TS-480 is very good but takes some setting up. Perhaps this will be a worthy successor? Time will tell.

The specifications below are a little vague. For example what does “good receive performance” mean? Also “split frequency operation”. Surely any half decent modern HF radio will have that capability! Hopefully more details will be forthcoming very soon. Of course the big question mark is the last specification, “price TBA”!

Hopefully sometime in July or August the rig will become available and we shall have a review of it in our Equipment Review section as soon as we can get one to Kelvin.
